Man Sets Gas Pump Fire to Alert Authorities

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

On August 18, 2026, at 3:20 a.m., Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a disorderly male at Glenn’s Food, 11810 N. Market Street. The suspect, identified as 51-year-old James F. Snyder, ignited a fire at the gas pumps after claiming he was being followed by three unseen people.

Snyder, who had been acting erratically for an hour, sprayed gasoline around the pumps, used a credit card to pay for fuel, and lit it with a lighter. Deputies upgraded to Code 3 response after learning of the fire, activated the emergency gas cutoff, and arrested Snyder. The business owner estimated $200,000 in damage. Snyder faces a felony arson charge.

Snyder told deputies he was scared and yelled for help, but no one responded, so he set the fire to alert authorities. Spokane County Fire District 9 extinguished the flames quickly.
