Spokane Community Event Honors Overdose Victims

Spokane Regional Health District (SRHD) is hosting a free community event on Saturday, Aug. 29, to honor and remember loved ones lost to overdose.

The event, called Healing Hands, Creative Hearts, will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Central Spokane Library. It includes a resource fair, live performers, and activities to create memorial lanterns for display on Overdose Awareness Day.

SRHD reported overdose deaths in Spokane County rose from 77 in 2018 to 233 in 2023, with rates increasing from 14. 8 to 42. 3 per 100,000 people. The health district stated reducing substance abuse is a top health priority.
