Spokane County Deputies Use Drone in Crisis Response

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

Spokane County Sheriff's Deputies used an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS or drone) to safely detain a woman in medical crisis during a July 24, 2026, incident in West Spokane County. The woman, who was not charged, was observed driving erratically and drinking disinfectant from bottles while appearing paranoid and disoriented.

Deputies, assisted by Cheney Police, Airway Heights Police, Kalispel Tribal Police, and a Behavioral Health Co-Responder Team, deployed the drone to monitor her movements without escalating the situation. After positioning patrol vehicles to block her SUV, deputies broke the driver's side window to unlock the door and safely detain her. She was medically evaluated on scene before being transported to a hospital.

The incident highlights the use of technology in crisis response, particularly when dealing with individuals exhibiting erratic behavior who may be in need of medical care rather than criminal charges.
