WIC Services Now On-Site at Maddie's Place

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

Spokane Regional Health District (SRHD) has launched on-site WIC services at Maddie’s Place, a recovery nursery for infants with prenatal substance exposure. The program, which began July 7, provides nutrition support, health screenings, and breastfeeding assistance to families without requiring them to leave the facility. WIC staff will be available every Tuesday from 1-5 p.m.

Mary Wood, WIC program manager, emphasized the importance of meeting families where they are. "By meeting them where they are, in a supportive and familiar environment, we can join Maddie’s Place in making the recovery process as successful as possible," she said. Kim Dunham, director of family advocacy at Maddie’s Place, noted that WIC has supported the facility since its opening three and a half years ago.

Maddie’s Place is one of only five recovery nurseries in the U. S. that keeps parents and babies together during withdrawal. The facility provides medical and non-medical care for infants with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, along with wraparound support for caregivers. WIC eligibility includes pregnant individuals, new mothers, or those with children under five.
